Cultural Annotated Biblioraphy

- 13th (2016)
13th opens the eyes of its' viewers to the racial inequality in the United States. It unearths the injust fact that the overwhelming population inside prison in the United States is African American.


- The Farm: Life Inside Angola Prison (1998)
The Farm deal with a maximum security prison in Louisiana run by a majority white staff and a majority black prisoner population. It displays several stories about injustices inside the prison as well as highlights the hope which the prisoners have.


- The House I Live In (2012)
This film highlights the ineffective way that America has been handling the war on drugs. Drugs cause prisoners and those dependent upon those prisoners to spiral into a depression, and the prison system is doing nothing to help those affected by this.


- Serving Life (2011)
Serving Life also deals with the Angola state penitentiary in Louisiana. It covers an important issue: that those who are serving life sentences should not be treated as sub-par humans and should be given all of the rights they deserve until the end of their lives in prison.


- Louis Theroux: Behind Bars (2008)
In this documentary, it showcases a prison which is greatly subdivided by race. The guards take him on a tour of the prison and show him that the racism is so deeply rooted that the subdivision cannot be undone.


- The Central Park Five (2012)
This historical crime documentary relates to how the prison system can be very broken at some points. In this case, five teenagers were wrongly convicted of raping a woman. Many years later the truth emerged.


- Eyes of the Rainbow (1997)
In Eyes of the Rainbow, the plot focuses on a woman who is a prisoner in the United States from Cuba. She recounts that she suffered greatly when she was incarcerated and was shocked at the American prison system.


- OJ: Made in America (2016)
A tale still fresh in our minds. OJ Simpson's story is told in this film that highlights the domestic abuse case as well as the haunting truths about America and media.


- Kids For Cash (2013)
This film is effective in showcasing how some are unluckily placed in American prisons and are thereby placed in a much worse spot in life once they are released. Even minor crimes can put some into these situations.


-After Innocence (2005)
Also dealing with a lack of a support system while being released from prison, After Innocence tells of 7 prisoners who struggle to transition back to normal society. The American prison system lacks the humanity of helping those even wrongly incarcerated return to normal life.
